6/10/2019 | 2:30 PM
Maya Romanoff | 6-167
At Maya Romanoff’s 2019 NeoCon speaker panel, we will discuss the sources of inspiration for the different verticals within Interior Design. Whether we are working in hospitality, retail or residential spaces, our work is meant to be aspirational, to move design to new places with new materials and new ideas. But where do they come from for different categories of the built environment? How are they similar? How are they different? How do ideas move between them? Our panel will feature Callison RTKL on hospitality, Starbucks on retail, and Corey Damen Jenkins on residential discussing this very question. Maya Romanoff’s CEO, Joyce Romanoff, will represent the manufacturing side of this panel and will serve as the thread that ties them all together.

[M107] WHAT CLIENTS WANT: ESSENTIAL DESIGN CONVERSATIONS
Monday, June 10 • 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
In 2019, the spaces we designers create are expected to do more than ever before. Today’s offices are the primary spaces where we connect and work for many of our waking hours. Furthermore, hospitality spaces extend beyond the boundaries of a delicious meal or a comfortable night’s stay, and retail stores have become engaging, immersive environments. The expanded scope of these projects requires design professionals to assume positions that draw on the fields of psychology, operations management, human resources and sociology to offer an all-encompassing experience for each person who enters a space. In this session, we will highlight key projects that exemplify what clients truly want, share insights from the field and offer an in-depth perspective on the expectations of the design client of tomorrow. [T207] DIRECTIONAL COLOR – DESIGN TRENDS: THE NESTING INSTINCT
Tuesday, June 11 • 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Nesting might seem an odd term to use in terms of office space, yet we might spend so many hours in the office that we have an inherent sense or proclivity to make the office seem more home-like. In addition, with so many people working at home at least some of the time, or for certain working overtime at home, there is a real need to create a space that feels comfortable and familiar while still providing a space for productive thinking. The thoughtful usage of color and design, especially in line with directional trends, enters most importantly into the equation. Join us as we explore design trends and the nesting instinct. [T214] APPROACHING HISTORIC PRESERVATION WITH AUTHENTICITY IN HOSPITALITY DESIGN
Tuesday, June 11 • 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM
What are the key challenges and solutions to renovating and restoring historic hospitality properties? Approaching historic preservation can be daunting—on one hand, it’s imperative to maintain the rich history and culture of a hotel; on the other hand, it’s perhaps equally important to ensure the final design is relevant to today’s modern aesthetic. Hear from an industry lifestyle expert who will address the topic of historic preservation by speaking to her experience designing historic and iconic hospitality properties in the US, from the South in New Orleans and Florida, to the East Coast in Maine. [T220] THE THREE PILLARS OF HUMAN CENTRIC DESIGN
Tuesday, June 11 • 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM
In the last 30 years, three major movements have evolved to become the cornerstones of modern human-centric design, in the United States and globally. The most recent, wellness design, deriving from today’s trend toward health and well-being, has joined universal design and biophilic design as major contributors. This trio has allowed designers to meet the human needs of interior spaces, as well as facilitating more functional, healthy and aesthetically pleasing design. This presentation will examine the synergistic combination of these major approaches by delving into unique highlights of each. We’ll also look at where all three disciplines intersect, such as encouraging safety, health and wellness, daylighting, interior air quality, comfort and visual enhancement. Further, this presentation will provide visual examples of how designers can successfully integrate these into residential spaces to improve quality of life. [Intermediate] [RES] [HSW]

[W305] LIVING & LEARNING: STUDENT HOUSING AS A CRITICAL COMPONENT OF HIGHER EDUCATION

Specifically, we’re going to dive into the role of student housing, homing in on the changing demands for design, as well as the role student housing has in recruitment and retention. We’ll discuss how student housing is becoming a more prominent part of the marketing mix for universities and gain a better understanding of what students really want in their on-campus living spaces. [W312] CURATING YOUR BRAND STYLE OR YOUR CLIENT’S VISION IN THE AGE OF INSPIRATION OVERLOAD
Wednesday, June 12 • 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM
While the endless, trendy online images stream by, how do we, as designers, choose the right ones? In our presentation, you’ll learn the necessary strategies to land on a look that speaks to your personal brand as a designer, your client’s style or both. We’ll also address a host of relevant questions, such as what is your style, and how do you communicate it? how do you help clients define their style? how do you fuse seemingly opposite styles together? and how do you do all of this in a time when thousands upon thousands of images are up for the liking? Whether cultivating their own branded aesthetic or working with clients to develop their style, attendees will learn fundamental steps necessary to streamline inspiration, quickly develop balanced mood boards, work with trends, as well as to use design language to effectively pitch a cohesive design theme.
